custom bespoke framing framer London

We make frames built to last, however here are some tips to get the most out of your frame and care for it so it can be looking it’s best for years to come.

Cleaning

When cleaning dust or marks on the glazing it is best to use a clean, dry microfibre or lint free cloth. The type of glazing used requires different cleaning solutions however in general, it is best not to use glass cleaner directly onto artglass. If using glass cleaner, spray it onto the cloth, never directly onto the glass. Avoid using water to clean your frame.

Similarly, a clean cloth is suitable for the frame, however some cleaning solutions may mark or damage the finish depending on the type of frame, if you have any specific questions please ask, we are happy to advise.

Handling

It is important for the longevity of the frame that it is handled and cared for whilst in transit. Always carry the frame with two hands so that excessive pressure is not put on any join. It is important to try and always keep the frame in its intended position when travelling to not put excessive pressure on the mounting as it may cause the artwork to become loose over time.

Hanging

We generally fit our frames with a ‘sub frame’ at the back. This provides strength and support for the frame and also provides a simple split batten hanging solution. We can also fix a picture cord if you prefer, please let us know during your consultation. The benefits of the split batten are that the frame remains secure on the wall and cannot be knocked out of position.

To Hang your artwork simply attach the loose batten to the wall, and then slide the artwork onto the batten securely so that the back of the frame interlocks with the batten on the wall. Smaller frames can be hung off screws in the wall also.

If you need help with hanging or installing artworks professionally, we can recommend a number of specialists who offer this service.

Storage & Placement

Artworks and especially works on paper are extremely sensitive to humidity and light. Framing offers protection in the way of UV filtering glass and sealed frames, however the placement of your frame can also help to protect the artwork over time. Consider carefully where your frame might go, for instance above radiators and in bathrooms or kitchens are places where temperature and humidity fluctuate. Likewise, next to doors or windows may affect the artwork over time.
